Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of art through her aunt Denise in her early years. The aunt was on the night shift as a nurse so she could indulge her passion of theater and literature throughout the day. DuVernay was first introduced to the film West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was taught by her that art could be a vehicle for activism. DuVernay was trained by her mother who was a social conscience and encouraged DuVernay to express herself through art. DuVernay was born with her family in Compton, spent each summer in Lowndes County Alabama in the family home that her father owned. Her father was awed by the historic civil rights march on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring community of Selma Alabama. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summers that DuVernay was led her to write a script for a movie on Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as the Civil Rights Movement. In 1990 DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she was awarded degrees in English as well as African American Studies. As studying, DuVernay began to consider producing for television journalism. DuVernay was a journalist intern at CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay was asked to check the trash inside the home of one of the jury. Her work left her dissatisfied in journalism, so she decided to pursue a career in the public relations industry. DuVernay was brought on straight from college to be an assistant publicist in the studio that was small. Then she founded The DuVernay Agency, her agency for public relations, in the year 1999.
